
In the summer of 2022, I had the great privilege of conducting research in a province in Cebu, Philippines, the ancestral home of my partner and, now, my children. The 3-month period of living in Cebu was not only a productive research trip, it was also transformative for my family of four, in terms of learning the culture of Cebuanos and Visayans, more broadly.
My research with serial migrants who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequently, still trying to figure out their next migratory aspirations. Time and critical temporalities studies became one lens in which I made sense of the participants experiences. Informed by critical Filipinx studies, and Allan Punsalan Isaac’s most recent book, Filipino Time, and the scholarship of temporalities and migration, I aimed to write about aspirational migrants’ experiences.
